How is performance calculated?

InvestNow provides two different ways of viewing portfolio-level performance:

  • My Returns’ uses a methodology called Extended Internal Rate of Return (XIRR). This calculation takes into account not only how your investments performed, but also when money was added or withdrawn from your portfolio. As a result, it reflects the actual growth of your money over time and represents your ‘real world’ investment experience
  • Investment Returns’ uses a methodology called Time Weighted Return (TWR). This removes the impact of money movements into and out of a fund and focuses solely on the performance generated by the underlying fund through market movements and the decisions of the investment manager.

A simple way to think about the difference is:

  • Investment Returns’ answers: “How have my investments performed?”
  • My Returns’ answers: “How has my money actually grown?”

Neither measure is more correct than the other. They simply provide different perspectives on performance.
