How to Perform an Annual Health Check on Your Investments This Holiday Season

As we come to the end of 2024, with some well-deserved rest and relaxation on the horizon, it’s a great time to review your financial goals for 2025 and beyond – essentially conducting an annual Health Check of your investments.

Here are the three things we suggest you do over the next couple of weeks.

1. Review your InvestNow portfolio(s)

The best way to review your InvestNow portfolio(s) is by spending some time looking through your Investor Report. These reports provide a comprehensive view of your portfolio(s) over the past 12 months, covering the value and performance of your investments, and all transactions during the period.

Throughout the year, we have run a series of investing workshops, based upon the InvestNow Investing Principles, where we have shared our expertise to produce insights and guides that you can easily apply.

Each workshop is only 20 minutes long and is jam-packed with information that we think you will find really useful, irrespective of where you are on your investing journey.

Portfolio Construction:

This workshop covers how you go about building your investment portfolio and what you should consider. The principles covered are:

  • Understand the risks: Learn how different assets behave, the importance of allocation and diversification.
  • Asset allocation is crucial: Understand how the right asset mix can significantly impact your long-term investment returns based on your goals.
  • Diversification is essential: Learn why spreading investments across various asset classes can enhance performance and help reduce the risk of major losses.
  • Individual risk tolerance matters: Find out how to evaluate your comfort with investment volatility and its implications for potential returns.
  • Investment styles can be complementary: Get insights into passive, active, and responsible investing strategies, and how to choose what suits your preferences best.

Portfolio Optimisation:

Providing key insights and actionable information, this workshop covers the different types of fees associated with investing and the different tax methodologies applied to different investment options.

3. Confirm your risk profile and your potential Kiwisaver portfolio retirement balance

We have two tools available, each taking approx. 5-10 minutes to complete.

1. Investor Risk Profile Tool

This tool will help you to determine what type of investor you are, which is largely aligned to your tolerance for risk. All you need to do is answer five simple questions and it will highlight the type of investment options that align to your risk tolerance.

2. KiwiSaver Retirement Balance Calculator

This tool will ask you questions about your current investment approach and will help you calculate what your KiwiSaver portfolio balance is projected to be by the time you hit the retirement age of 65. Key things to have available are your current KiwiSaver balance and current KiwiSaver contribution rate – you don’t need to be an InvestNow KiwiSaver Scheme member to use this tool!

Adjusting some of the inputs into the tool will show you their potential impact on your long-term retirement savings goals.
